Mladá Boleslav, April 13th, 2011 – Beginning at the end of 2012, ŠKODA will manufacture the direct shift gearbox DQ200 at its Northern Bohemian plant in Vrchalbí. The modern direct shift gearbox – called DSG for short – will be used in vehicles of the ŠKODA brand, but also in models built by Volkswagen, Seat, and Audi. With the new production of components, the Czech manufacturer secures the future of the Vrchlabí plant, where the models Roomster und Octavia are being assembled at this time.

"We are very happy about the nod for Vrchlabí," explains Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland, the chairman of the board of Škoda Auto. "The DQ200 gearbox plays an significant role for the respective models of the various brands of the Group and is of strategic importance for the Group. The fact that our plant at the foot of the Giant Mountains was selected as the production site shows the trust Volkswagen has in the technological competence of our company. Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of our belonging to the Volkswagen Group, this decision proves once more how much both partners benefit from each other."

Michael Oeljeklaus, the board member for production and logistics, emphasizes the advantages of the DQ200 manufacture for the ŠKODA brand: "This decision corresponds with our goal to produce engines and gearboxes for our most important models in our own plants. The new production in Vrchlabí will also profit from the knowledge gained in the production of gearboxes in Mladá Boleslav. The production in our own plant will facilitate the logistical processes of the automobile manufacture in the Czech Republic.

The 7-gear direct shift gearbox DQ200 is among the most innovative automatic transmissions in the automobile industry. The direct shift gearbox offers the shifting comfort of an automatic gearbox in combination with fast gear changes without any interruption of the traction power. This comfort is achieved by means of two partial gearboxes allowing for a fully automatic gear shift without any traction interruption. Among other things, this results in lower fuel consumption. The first ever dual clutch gearbox introduced in volume production was launched in the market by Volkswagen in 2003 – at the time, with the internal designation DQ250.
